Men's Fashion: Women's Alternatives

Sometimes I honestly believe that I dress more like a guy than I do a girl. Days I look at myself in the mirror and think, "I could shave off my hair and people would think I'm a guy", so I thought, can we, as girls, get away with wearing male fashion trends?
It is clear that there are stereotypes in fashion and certain items of clothing are often presented towards a certain gender, however I believe that the gender segregation in fashion is starting to blur, which is good! I think it is easier for women to wear male clothing than it is for a man to rock up in a sparkly metallic two piece fit for a woman, although I believe men also should have a say in what they wear. The only difference for when women wear men's clothes is that the style in relation to fit and size differs. Therefore, I have come up with some women's alternatives to some of the styles that are being rocked by some of the best dressed celebrity males!
Many men have been have stood out recently on the fashion scene, from the red carpet looks of newcomer and 'The Fault in our Stars' actor, Ansel Elgort, to the alternative style of 'The 1975' frontman, Matt Healey.

Liam Payne

Liam's fashion has been on the up ever since his second appearance on ITV's 'The X Factor' back in 2010. 2014 has seen a new fashion icon take birth from the One Direction member, who has recently, with the rest of his band ahead of their recent album, 'Midnight Memories' , changed their image to create a more mature edge to their music. Liam's stage outfit is often opting for a muscle tee, loose jeans and work boots, paired with either a large checked shirt, like outfit listed, or a large bandana sheet hanging from his back pocket. His style always stands out to me from his other band mates, with the likes of Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson often opting for a full black oufit, with Niall Horan wearing a plain coloured tee with skinny jeans.

The style award for the band is often passed straight to Harry, although I feel like Harry's usual on-trend style is actually going out of style.

His choice of suede boots and odd-patterned shirts are at least eye catching, although I feel like the grunge look opted for by Liam takes over from Harry's "posh boy from Chelsea" vibe that he has. Copying Liam's style you could go for the 'Navy Check Oversized Shirt' from River Island, opting to pair this with a plain white muscle tee and boyfriend jeans. These would go well with the original chunky boots from 'Catapillar', Womens Colorado
For Liam's beanie, you could even channel a bit of Liam in your outfit and opt for the 'Four Arrows Beanie' from Infinitee Apparel, designed to fit the tattoo that Liam has on his arm.

Matt Healy

Matt Healy is reknown for his ripped jeans and grunge style, so no wonder he is such a style icon for those on the "alternative" scene. His recent outfit for Coachella last month is one that showcased his style to a T, presenting his recent stage style with open/no shirts and tight fitted jeans. Opting for this outfit I would consider the 'Black Cuff Sleeve Utility Shirt' from New Look, worn open with a black bralet or bandeau. When it comes to jean I always go for TOPSHOP as they seem to always have the best quality. As of this, I would choose the 'MOTO Washed Black Jeans' for the ripped affect, or to get the edgier look I would choose a darker shade of jeans, like the 'MOTO Black Leigh Jeans' and cut and rip a hole in the knee yourself (on-trend DIY trick for this season).

His sunglasses could be compared to the 'Sissy Sunglasses' from American Apparel in Crystal Pink and his boots like the 'Studded Flat Leather Ankle Boots' from Zara.

It is clear that Matt's style is completely different to the likes of Liam, although both are in fashion. A lot of style choices link back to the 90's vibe, which Matt definitely channels, as well as being named a fashion trend-setter by the public. His unique style has now become a mainstream look, with both males and females, complimenting Matt on his style choices matched with his reknown stage presecene.

Dave Franco

The 'Bad Neighbours', picture left with girlfriend and 'Scream 4' actress, Alison Brie, shows the typical "guy-next-door" style which can be worn day to day, unlike the style of Matt's which is more edgy and daring. Dave's bold statement of double denim works with the standard denim colour of his trousers and light denim shirt, paired with boots and a coat, perfect for this Autumn.

Dave's coat is alternative to the 'Penfield Keswick Padded Toggle Coat' from ASOS, wearing with some Mom Jeans, Denim Shirt and some 'Black Chunky Double Strap Biker Boots' from New Look, which would tie the outfit together better as well as complimenting the mom jeans chosen, instead of opting for lace up boots, following Dave's trend.

Dave's guy next-door style is different from both Matt and Liam in the way it can be worn everyday, however still being on trend. This look however is a little harder for females to pull off although we are trying to break the habit of fashion segregation. I always admire Dave's fashion choices, especially on the red carpet, sporting suits and two pieces, in contrast to his out and about style of checkered shirts and knee length shorts. This represents the perfect contrast between day and night wear, showing that evening is for sophistication whereas day time is for expression and fun.

Luke Hemmings

Luke Hemmings from 5 Seconds of Summer is known for his plaid shirts and black skinny jeans, so it was no wonder this was the style he opted for at this year's Billboard Music Awards. His choice of a leather jacket added that edge that he looks for in his fashion statements, finding an easy replica for this outfit. MANGO's 'Leather Biker Jacket' gives an easily alternative to Luke's actual jacket, as well as his shirt, like the 'Telisa Plaid Shirt' from Misguided.

To pull of that 'Luke' vibe with your outfit, opt for some black skinny jeans, like Luke wore with this outfit, or channelling his "stage look" with some rips, made through bought or DIY, like the Matt Healy look.

Finishing the outfit go for some Black Vans or Converse, or even opt for a band favourite and go for some 'Dr Martin's 8 Eye Lace Up Boots' in Black. This will channel the inner "punk rock" which 5SOS try (and succeed) to portray, making you festival ready for gigs such as Reading and Leeds.

Pharrel Williams

Named one of the fashionable men of 2013 on his comeback, Pharrel is very unique in style, making daring choices with patterns, even bringing oversized fedoras in to fashion. To replicate Pharrel's shirt, chose a minimalistic tiger shirt, like the 'New Love Club Tiger T-Shirt' from TOPMAN (doesn't matter if it is a men's store!). Sport this with some oversized jewellery, or, to add that "girly vibe", cut the top in to a crop top and wear with a body chain, like the 'Gold Tone Twisted Chain Body Harness' from River Island. Wear any of these with some of TOPSHOPs jeans, preferably the 'Baggy Rip Knee' jeans.

Tying off the Pharrel vibe, ALWAYS accessorise with an oversized fedora, like the 'Short Brim Fedora Hat in Black' from Urban Outfitters. This will channel your inner Pharrel and tie together your whole outfit, being, like Luke's, an outfit fit for festivals like Reading or Leeds, or even for Warped Tour! The key to following Pharrel's look, unlike all the others listed, is to over accessorise.

So here is a quick how-to guide on what to look out for when copying male style! Follow rules such as;

  • If the look is baggy trousers, go towards boyfriend or mom style jeans
  • If you want to pull off a Pharrel, always over accessorise
  • Leather jackets usually look the same for both male and female
  • It doesn't matter when shopping for T-Shirts if you look in the mens section as well as the women
  • A lot of style is now unisex, so don't think that by copying male style that you will look like a male yourself, you will look lovely no matter what you choose to wear!
  • If you want to copy Matt Healy's style just look in the women's section as he has admitted to wearing women's shirts
  • If you want the exact replicas from any celebrity, just type in to a search engine '[celebrity name] style steal', it will come up with a lot of choices! (here's one for Luke Hemmings)

Also, just to add I am going to start a new thing on Polyvore (the link goes to my profile on Polyvore if you want to go check it out!) called 'Celebrity Style Steals'  where every week I will post another style steal for you guys, wooo! Hopefully you enjoyed this post and there will be more plenty to come!
Furthermore, I would like your feedback on my last 'Fashion Icon of the Fortnight', Calum Hood. Do you think bringing males in to my blog is a good idea or do you prefer specifically female? I didn't want to segregate the whole other side of fashion hence this and my previous post, pleas give me your feedback it would be very appreciated, thanks!

Just to add, my best friend, Chloe, started a blog the other day named 'Kiloimusic.blogspot.co.uk' where she will regularly review music, so go check out her blog!
